If you need a bit more from your holiday than relaxing by the pool or beach then there are many places well worth visiting; villages such as Assos, stunning Myrtos beach and the beautiful harbour of Fiskardo, virtually undamaged by the earthquake of 1953, the beautiful church of Agios Gerasimos, and the Drogaarti caves and Melissani cave lake.
It is Greece’s third largest mountain. It’s surrounding National Park provides excellent walking opportunities, particularly in the spring and Autumn, and is home to the Islands native wild horses.
The famous Robola vineyards are found in the Omala Valley.
A ferry ride from Sami to Ithaca for a day trip is well worth a visit. During the summer of 2000 the town of Sami was used to film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, set in war-time Kefalonia.
Marine wildlife on Kefalonia’s shores include dolphins Turtles. The marine Turtle project was set up some years ago to observe and recorded the nesting female loggerhead turtles (Caretta Caretta) on the beaches around the Island. This has increased numbers and been a huge success. They can often be seen surrounding the morning fishing boats in Argostoli Harbour.
